Your oral health is one of the most reliable windows into your overall well-being, and the simple act of showing up for a dental exam twice a year can be the difference between catching a small problem early and facing a complex, costly one later. Most people know they should schedule regular cleanings, but far fewer understand why the quality and consistency of that care matters so deeply.

At Serenity Valley Family Dentistry in Fargo, ND, dental exams and teeth cleanings are anything but routine. As part of our comprehensive preventive dentistry services, we approach every appointment as an opportunity to connect with patients, understand their concerns, and guide them toward long-term health. Our practice was founded in 2006 with a mission to connect, guide, and support patients in achieving their highest level of overall well-being and dental awareness. That philosophy is present in every cleaning we perform.

What Happens During a Dental Exam at Serenity Valley Family Dentistry?

A thorough dental exam is far more than a quick look in your mouth. At Serenity Valley Family Dentistry, each exam begins with a review of your health history and any changes since your last visit.  Our team uses EagleSoft practice management software to maintain detailed, accurate patient records so that every provider who sees you has the full picture of your dental health, and nothing slips through the cracks between appointments.

Visual and Diagnostic Assessment

During the exam, your dentist will evaluate each tooth for signs of decay, fractures, or wear. We assess the health of your gums, checking for pocketing, recession, or inflammation that could indicate the early stages of periodontal disease. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of adults aged 30 and older have signs of gum disease, a largely preventable condition with routine professional care. Bite alignment, jaw function, and the soft tissues of the mouth are also reviewed. For patients who are overdue for X-rays, digital radiographs give our team a detailed look at what is happening beneath the surface, including bone levels and areas between teeth that cannot be seen with the naked eye alone.

Oral Cancer Screening

One of the most important components of your exam is the oral cancer screening. During this brief but critical evaluation, we visually and physically check the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, palate, and throat for any unusual tissue changes. Early detection dramatically improves outcomes, and we take this step seriously with every patient, every time.

What to Expect During Your Professional Teeth Cleaning

Even patients who brush and floss consistently benefit from a professional cleaning, because there are areas that a toothbrush simply cannot reach and deposits that harden over time into calculus that only dental instruments can remove. Our team of three dedicated dental hygienists brings a level of care and attentiveness that makes the long-term benefits of preventative check-ups tangible for every patient who walks through our doors.

Scaling and Polishing

During your cleaning, your hygienist will use specialized instruments to carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup from all tooth surfaces, including along and just below the gumline. Once scaling is complete, teeth are polished using a gentle prophy paste to remove surface stains and leave enamel smooth, which also helps slow future plaque accumulation. We take our time with each patient rather than rushing through the appointment, because we believe the quality of your care reflects directly in your outcomes.

Personalized Home Care Guidance

Before your appointment wraps up, your hygienist will walk you through any areas that need attention at home and offer specific recommendations for your brushing, flossing, and rinsing routine. Our team is here to help you understand exactly what to look for and how to prevent it.

How Often Should You Schedule Cleanings and Exams?

For most patients, twice-yearly visits are the standard recommendation, and they remain the most effective way to stay ahead of developing issues. However, some patients with a history of gum disease, dry mouth, or other risk factors may benefit from cleanings every three to four months. During your exam, we will discuss what schedule makes the most sense for your specific needs and document it in your EagleSoft records so your care plan is consistent from visit to visit.
